JOURNAL / COAST

Much of our work is on the Oaxaca coast: hotels, bungalows and houses in Zipolite, Puerto Escondido and Mazunte. There, a door or window is far more exposed than in the city, and every decision counts.

Choosing the species

We use stable, durable woods such as tzalam and macuil. At El Guayacán in Zipolite, we made the project’s sliding windows, doors and furniture in macuil, and we continue to maintain them.

Designing for the climate

  • Generous sections that withstand the movement of wood with humidity.
  • Joinery that allows that movement instead of fighting it.
  • Drip edges and slopes so water runs off and doesn't sit on the piece.
  • Corrosion-resistant hardware: on the coast, salt attacks metal long before it affects wood.
  • Protection from the architecture: an overhang or a recess extends the life of any finish.

Finish and maintenance

Outdoors we use finishes designed for sun and humidity. No finish lasts forever by the sea: it should be checked at least once a year and renewed before the wood is left exposed. We provide that maintenance for the pieces we make.

Logistics

We build in our Huayápam workshop and deliver and install with our own team. Freight and installation travel are quoted separately.
