WHAT WE MAKE / WOOD WINDOWS

The alternative to aluminum.

A solid wood window insulates better than aluminum, can be repaired and refinished, and brings a warmth no metal profile has. It is the choice of studios that want the window to be part of the architecture.

We make European-style windows, with tilt-and-turn hardware and double or triple glazing, as well as the classic systems: casement, sliding, sash and awning windows, all with seals against air, water and dust.

We have made tzalam lift-and-slide windows for Graciela Iturbide's studio, macuil sliding windows for bungalows in Zipolite and wood screens for houses in Mexico City.

SYSTEMS

Nine ways to open a window.

01

Casement

Single or multi-leaf on hinges, opening in or out, alone or combined with fixed lights.

What it’s for
  • Bedrooms, living rooms and studios
  • Façades of homes and hotels
  • Windows that open fully for ventilation
Reference price
MXN 28,000 – 95,000 per window, depending on size, hardware and glass.
Keep in mind
It closes against its frame with seals, so it seals very well. The leaf needs clear space to open.
02

Tilt-and-turn

The European-style window: the same leaf swings open like a casement or tilts in from the top to ventilate.

What it’s for
  • Bedrooms and bathrooms ventilated while ajar
  • Homes and buildings in the city
  • Façades where insulation matters
Reference price
MXN 28,000 – 95,000 per window, depending on size, hardware and glass.
Keep in mind
Its hardware locks at several points around the leaf: it seals very well and takes double or triple glazing.
03

Fixed

Glass panes in a wood frame, with no opening, to bring in light and views.

What it’s for
  • Large glazing and glass façades
  • Next to opening leaves
  • High or hard-to-reach openings
Reference price
MXN 28,000 – 95,000 per window; it depends mainly on size and glass.
Keep in mind
Since it doesn’t open, it insulates best. It works well combined with an opening leaf.
04

Sliding

Two-leaf and multi-leaf windows and glazing that slide without taking up space.

What it’s for
  • Large glazing onto terraces and gardens
  • Hotel rooms
  • Wide openings with no room for a casement
Reference price
MXN 28,000 – 95,000 per window; large-format glazing can go above that.
Keep in mind
It opens only the part its leaves don’t cover and seals less than a casement; on exposed façades a lift-and-slide works better.
05

Lift-and-slide

For large openings: the leaves lift to slide and seal when lowered.

What it’s for
  • Large-format glazing
  • Façades exposed to wind and rain
  • Architect-designed studios and homes
Reference price
Large-format glazing can go above the MXN 28,000 – 95,000 range.
Keep in mind
It combines the wide opening of a sliding window with the seal of a casement, in exchange for heavier hardware.
06

Sash

Leaves that move up and down vertically, taking no space inside or outside.

What it’s for
  • Traditional-style homes
  • Windows next to hallways or sidewalks
  • Kitchens and bathrooms
Reference price
MXN 28,000 – 95,000 per window, depending on size, hardware and glass.
Keep in mind
It opens half the opening. The leaves are balanced so they lift with little effort and stay where you leave them.
07

Awning

The leaf is hinged at the top and the bottom swings out, to ventilate even when it rains.

What it’s for
  • Bathrooms, kitchens and utility rooms
  • High windows or under an overhang
  • Rainy climates
Reference price
MXN 28,000 – 95,000 per window, depending on size, hardware and glass.
Keep in mind
When open, the leaf shields the opening from rain; it ventilates less than a casement because it opens only partly.
08

Wood screens

Wood lattices for façades, windows and dividers that filter light, views and air.

What it’s for
  • Façades that filter sun and views
  • Interior dividers
  • Leaves in front of a window
Reference price
Quoted by size and lattice design.
Keep in mind
They let air and light through but don’t close the opening; to insulate they are combined with a window.
09

Shutters

Louvered shutters, solid shutters and insect screens that go with the window.

What it’s for
  • Façade windows exposed to the sun
  • Homes on the coast
  • Bedrooms that need darkening
Reference price
Quoted by size and number of leaves.
Keep in mind
They protect the window from sun and rain and darken the room; louvered ones let air through when closed.

HOW WE MAKE THEM

Window precision, in wood.

A window has to seal, open smoothly and stand up to the sun year after year.

GLASS AND INSULATION

Double or triple glazing, sealed in wood.

Every window can take single, double or triple glazing. The cavity between panes insulates; together with the leaf’s seals, the wood and a precise fit, the window protects the interior from cold, heat, noise and humidity.

  1. 01

    Temperature

Double and triple glazing slow the passage of heat and cold, and wood insulates better than an aluminum profile.

  2. 02

    Noise

Every pane and every cavity dampens street noise; triple glazing suits very exposed façades.

  3. 03

    Humidity

The inner pane stays warmer and fogs less; seals and drip edges keep water and air out.

  4. 04

    Seals and weatherstripping

Seals around the whole leaf so air, water and dust stay out when the window is closed.

  5. 05

    Safety glass

Laminated or tempered glass for large glazing, low windows and passageways.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Wood windows and screens

How much does a solid wood window cost?

As a reference, a solid wood window runs MXN 28,000 to 95,000 per piece, before VAT and freight. It depends on size, system and glass; large-format glazing can go above that.

Is wood better than aluminum?

Wood insulates better, can be repaired and gives the space presence; it needs periodic finish maintenance and a higher investment. We explain it in detail in our article on wood vs. aluminum windows and doors.

Do wood windows work by the beach?

Yes, if they are chosen and designed for it: a stable species, generous sections, drip edges, salt-resistant hardware and a finish that is renewed regularly. We made macuil windows and doors for bungalows in Zipolite.

Do you make windows with double or triple glazing?

Yes. Any of our windows can take double or triple glazing, which insulates from cold, heat and noise and reduces condensation. With seals around the whole leaf, the window seals against air, water and dust.

What is a tilt-and-turn window?

It is the European-style window: with the same handle, the leaf swings open like a casement or tilts in from the top to ventilate without opening fully. Its hardware locks at several points, so it seals very well.

Do you make lift-and-slide windows?

Yes. We made tzalam lift-and-slide windows for Estudio Iturbide in Mexico City, with Taller Mauricio Rocha.
